Every Action Counts
World Cancer Day is a truly global event. In order to achieve our objective of reaching as much of the world’s population as possible, we need your help.
Whether you do something as large as running your own World Cancer Day campaign, or as simple as sharing our template messages amongst your networks, every action has an impact. Show the world that we can, I can… get involved in the fight against cancer.
We appreciate that everyone supporting the Day has different needs and priorities, so there are a wide variety of ways for your organisation and members to get involved. We've listed some ideas below.
Ways to help
ADD YOUR WCD ACTIVITY TO THE MAP OF IMPACT
The interactive Map of Impact aims to feature all of the events, (social media) activities and actions that are taking place on/around World Cancer Day.
Everyone is encouraged to share their plans whether they are launching a report, organising a fundraising event or advocacy activity, we want the world to know and encouraged to get online and share it!
Even if you have an event, activity or campaign that does not fall on 4 February, please add it anyway. The map is a platform and a great opportunity to show the world all the great work our community is doing to reduce the global cancer burden.
Do you already know what you will be doing for World Cancer Day 2017?
Join the 'Support through Sport' social media campaign
One of the biggest impacts we can make is by spreading the word on social media. The ‘Support through Sport’ social media campaign is an easy way to get involved in World Cancer Day, to show your support in the fight against cancer and increase the global impact of the Day.
Ready. Set. Go!
1. Simply take your ball, racket, frisbee, skis, helmet, paddle, hand or whatever your sporting connection and write the World Cancer Day hashtag on it - #WeCanICan
2. Take a photo of you, your team or your club with the #WeCanICan hashtag
3. Show your support by sharing your photo as far and wide as you can across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, including #WeCanICan and #WorldCancerDay in your post.
Be as creative as you like. And, if you rather not write on your sport equipment, why not use your hands, a piece of paper, a post-it note, or writing it in the sand?
The 'Support through Sport' toolkit provides ready-made messages to help promote the campaign on your social accounts and get others involved. View the Toolkit here.
Please use products that can be used on skin e.g. body paint, makeup. Please note that ballpoint pens or other water-based ink pens can be safely used, but make sure to avoid using permanent markers.

Support WCD on social media
Social media are a powerful way to spread messages on a global scale. There are many ways of supporting World Cancer Day on social media:
- Follow the official Facebook and Instagram accounts
- Sign up for the World Cancer Day Thunderclap campaign
- Change your Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn profile pictures and covers on 4 February by using those provided on www.worldcancerday.org/materials
- Use the official hashtags #WorldCancerDay and #WeCanICan
- Use social media to communicate about your World Cancer Day plans and share key messages in the lead up to and on the Day
The World Cancer Day Social Media Guide provides guidance on how to effectively use social platforms for marking the Day as well as ready-made tweets to adapt for your own use. The Guide is available in English, French and Spanish on www.worldcancerday.org/materials.
JOIN THE WCD THUNDERCLAP CAMPAIGN
Thunderclap is a tool that facilitates the mass dissemination of messages via Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr by simultaneously posting to the accounts of those who support the campaign. This is a great way to give the campaign visibility and increase the chances of ‘trending’ on social media platforms.
For our Thunderclap to go live, we need the support of a minimum of 500 individuals for the message to be broadcast.
DOWNLOAD WCD CAMPAIGN MATERIALS
We have developed campaign materials such as posters, factsheets and toolkits for your use to support and promote the Day and the theme. Be sure to share them within your organisation and wider network.
INCREASE WCD'S IMPACT
Through a press/media campaign
Quotable quotes, media sound bites as well as a template press release are available in our Media section to help you promote the Day to media in your region. Also see section ‘Stop The Press’ in the Members' Toolkit for more information.
Through a special event/activity
Are you planning an event between January and February? Will you be releasing a new publication? Do you have any other important announcements scheduled for that period?
Why not align your plans with World Cancer Day? It will simultaneously have a larger impact and contribute to the overall success of the Day.
World Cancer Day is the perfect opportunity for corporates to engage in the fight against cancer and/or for you to encourage them to do so. The specially tailored Corporate Toolkit provides guidance on how they can help support the Day, such as promoting the campaign amongst their employees, as well as ways in which employers can help cancer patients cope within the workplace.
With a mention on your website
Make sure that the World Cancer Day logo is present on your website, link to www.worldcancerday.org or upload a small article onto your site about the Day.
We want all the World Cancer Day resources to be accessible to as many people as possible globally. As a start, all materials are available in English, French, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, however, we would appreciate your help to translate them into other languages.
Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org, if you think you can contribute to additional translations.
