ALTERNATIVE LIVELIHOOD FOR BEEDI ROOLING WOMEN

PROJECT TO PREVENT TOBACCO CANCER – GROUND ROOT PREVENTION- AN EFFORT TO SALVAGE THE SOCIETY TRANSITION OF BEEDI ROLLING WOMEN TO SUSTATAINABLE ALTERNATIVE LIVLIHOOD  The Cancer Institute (WIA), conducts awareness programs to help the beedi rolling women to come out of the industry to an alternative job  The women then are trained on skill development under the Skill development by Tamil Nadu Government and NABARD ( National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development) – Training given by Exodus Exports Pvt. Ltd., paying a monthly stipend  These women are then permanently employed and trained further to make Cancer Wigs for Cancer Patients  A dignified and safer job in a secured environment is provided besides regular counselling, workshop and entertainments are conducted to boost their morale  An amazing transformation happens in their lives . Once they were making products that would destroy people’s lives but now they make products that brings joy to many lives.
