Community Cancer Awareness and Oral and Breast Screening Camp Organized by Tata Memorial Hospital( Department of Preventive Oncology)

A community cancer awareness camp was successfully organized by Tata Memorial Hospital as part of its ongoing commitment to cancer prevention, early detection, and public education. This initiative was conceptualized and coordinated by Mrs. Sapna, a dedicated Phlebotomist working in the Department of Preventive Oncology, whose close interaction with patients and community members enabled her to recognize a critical gap in cancer awareness at the grassroots level. Total Beneficiary 155 People attend this event.

Through her daily professional experience, Mrs. Sapna observed that many individuals in the community lack basic knowledge about cancer, its early warning signs, and the importance of timely screening. She realized that fear, myths, and misinformation often prevent people from seeking medical advice at an early stage, leading to delayed diagnosis and poorer outcomes. Motivated by this understanding, she took the initiative to organize a community-based awareness camp with the support and guidance of Tata Memorial Hospital.

The camp focused on educating community members about common cancers, particularly oral, cervical, and breast cancer, which have a high incidence but are largely preventable and treatable when detected early. Participants were informed about risk factors, early symptoms, preventive measures, and the availability of screening services. Emphasis was placed on adopting healthy lifestyles and seeking prompt medical consultation for any suspicious signs or symptoms.

The camp also served as a platform to encourage community participation and build trust between healthcare providers and the public. By delivering information in a simple and culturally appropriate manner, the program helped reduce fear and empowered individuals to take responsibility for their health.

This initiative reflects the strong preventive oncology vision of Tata Memorial Hospital and highlights how committed healthcare workers like Mrs. Sapna can play a vital role in extending cancer awareness beyond hospital walls and into the community, thereby contributing to early detection and improved cancer outcomes.
