Person with a lived experience of cancer

Aishath Athika, Maldives

How did it start?

It started with severe back pain, and towards the end, persistent headaches began to appear. I consulted several times and underwent an MRI, but no other investigations were done at that time as it was considered just back pain. Overtime, I began noticing small red spots appearing on my arms and legs, along with growing fatigue.

What was the biggest challenge(s) in your experience with cancer?

The hardest part for me was not knowing what was happening to me at first. Once I learned about the diagnosis, I faced overwhelming feelings of hopelessness and anxiety, compounded by the stigma that surrounds cancer. Enduring the side effects of chemotherapy, and being away from my family while being admitted in the ICU in a foreign country made the journey even more challenging.

What helped you most?

What carried me through my weakest and darkest moments was my faith along with the constant love and support of my parents and family, especially my mother, was a guiding light throughout my journey. I witnessed her standing strong beside me through every challenge, enduring every hardship as if it were her own, and without her, I truly wouldn't be where I am today. Beyond my family, the prayers, kind words, and hopeful encouragement from friends, CM team and others gave me comfort, and reminded me that I was never alone. Their support, combined with my faith, gave me the strength to keep moving forward, even when the path seemed impossible.

What was your experience of the healthcare system?

Being treated in a hospital abroad came with challenges, particularly due to language differences. Despite this, the healthcare team provided consistent support and demonstrated great patience and professionalism throughout my care.

What is your message of hope or words of advice?

Never lose faith in Allah, even when life feels overwhelming and the darkest moments seem endless. Seek medical attention for any recurring or persistent symptoms, no matter how small they may seem. Surround yourself with loved ones, ask for their support, and accept it with an open heart. With patience, resilience, and determination, you will overcome this, heal, and one day transform your journey into a source of strength Insha Allah.
