You are not alone
Person living with cancer

Asma, Maldives

A year ago, I went to the doctor because I was having ear pain and ended up being diagnosed with thyroid cancer by accident. After some tests, I learned that I had a tumor on my thyroid, and that it was cancerous. For someone who has always prioritized exercise and health, it was a shock to everyone, including me. I couldn’t believe it, and the mental toll it took on me was heavy. People around me struggled to understand how I, someone who took care of myself, could be facing such a serious diagnosis. Some even made jokes, and I felt really down.

But there was something I held onto through it all: the healthy habits I’d built before my diagnosis. Those habits helped me recover more quickly after my thyroidectomy, where they removed my entire thyroid. My surgery wasn’t easy, but the support I received from friends and family was incredible. Just knowing that people were there for me made all the difference.

After surgery, I traveled to India for radiation with my daughter and son-in-law. It was a tough time, being isolated for radiation, far from home, and feeling alone at times. But my daughter’s strength and courage were truly inspiring. She was there for me, not just as a daughter, but as my rock, taking care of me every step of the way.

I’m here today because of the hardworking doctors and health professionals, immense support from my family, friends, and all who have prayed for me. Having a strong support system has been key to my recovery. Most importantly, Praise be to Allah Almighty for saving my life and I always pray to the almighty to keep me healthy and giving me the confidence to go on with life.

I’ve learned just how vital it is to take care of yourself and get regular checkups. Early diagnosis can save lives. Stay healthy, stay strong, and never underestimate the power of a caring community. I’m so thankful for the journey I’ve been through, and I’m looking ahead with hope, strength, and gratitude. 🙏
