Dave, Canada
A lump quickly growing on the side of my neck in early 2018 prompted me to seek some answers.
Turns out I had cancer in my neck caused by the HPV virus which required minor surgery and 35 rounds of radiation.
The day I was diagnosed, they also discovered I had prostate cancer with an extremely high rating of 155! I was put on hormone therapy, my head and neck cancer was given priority and a year later after my neck cancer was eradicated, I had a prostatectomy and more hormone therapy.
Fast forward, I was provided another 32 rounds of radiation to my pelvic region. 5 years of treatment that really kicked by butt!
But I persevered through it all maintaining an attitude of "Never Giving Up," continued to do things I loved like skiing, yoga and cycling. I body did go through some significant changes but now that I am cancer free, I can say I am feeling happy to be alive and contributing to my community and in sharing my story.
Never Give Up!
The hormone therapy was the biggest challenge. I went through "Manopaus" a similar condition that females go through. Losing my ability to maintain a sexual relationship was also extremely challenging but speaking to others go through similar treatments and being open about the changes helped me to get through this very difficult time.
Staying connected to things that meant the most to me. Family, Volunteering and staying active.
The healthcare professionals responded very well and I felt supported through the entire 5 years of treatments.
Never Give Up! Learn. Ask questions. This is your health journey. You are in charge of your own health. If this is a wake up call, then make the changes to have a more healthy life!
