Fathimath, Maldives
Fathimath's journey began in 2013 with her first battle against cancer. At the time, she was balancing a heavy workload, providing for her children, and pursuing her master's degree.
She faced significant exhaustion, fear, and uncertainty while juggling work and family responsibilities during her initial diagnosis. A major trial occurred in 2024 when the cancer returned, testing her strength once again. The journey has been a continuous struggle involving ongoing medical treatments and the need to maintain her daily life while on medication.
Her unwavering faith and gratitude to Allah provided her with the strength to endure the hardships. She credits her survival and progress to the love and prayers of her children, siblings, and close friends. An internal determination to never give up and the belief that every day is a gift helped her keep moving forward.
Although a cancer unit now exists in the Maldives, the quality and consistency of services have declined over time. Many patients are still being sent to India and Sri Lanka for treatment, which cannot be considered a sustainable solution for the healthcare system. True progress requires investing in resources-modern facilities, reliable access to medicines, and, most importantly, well trained doctors and nurses. Strengthening in-country cancer care would reduce the burden on patients and families and create a more resilient and self-reliant healthcare system for the future.
To anyone facing illness or personal struggles, remember that you do not have to fight by yourself. Faith, resilience, and the support of loved ones make the impossible possible. Even when tested, stay standing and keep moving forward, as every moment is a reminder of your personal strength.
