Your story gave me hope
Person with a lived experience of cancer

Gloria Chinyere, Nigeria

How did it start?

It was in August 2016. I accidentally found a lump in my left breast one evening. At first, I was told it was benign but tests, scans and a tru cut biopsy revealed it was malignant. My diagnosis really hurt me and evoked a lot of negative emotions. I believed I was going to die. Unfortunately I didn't know there was a history of cancer in my family and didn't tell my doctor.

What was the biggest challenge(s) in your experience with cancer?

My biggest challenge has always been finances. Cancer treatment is expensive and medications often unavailable.

What helped you most?

A strong support system and positive mindset helped me the most.

What was your experience of the healthcare system?

The Nigeria health system still have a lot to fix as regards cancer care. Health infrastructure needs improvement. During my radiotherapy, there was so many down times. Sometimes I skip treatments because medications are not available or affordable. Psychotherapy is still limited. Patient Navigation is also not mainstream yet.

What is your message of hope or words of advice?

To everyone battling cancer, never give up hope. Live with intentionality. Prioritize yourself and your happiness. Find purpose in your suffering and live life to the fullest. Never let cancer win.
