Person with a lived experience of cancer

Jannette, United States

How did it start?

It started with me feeling tired all the time and nausea. I knew something was wrong because I was feeling tired more usual than normal. I got my diagnosis from a oncologist.Yes my concerns, my background and personal situation were taken into account

What was the biggest challenge(s) in your experience with cancer?

The biggest challenges in my experience with cancer were the emotional tools and financial stress

What helped you most?

What helped me most was knowing that there was organizations that help

What was your experience of the healthcare system?

Yes I felt heard, respected and included in decisions about my care. My doctor was very supportive and asked me how I felt about things concerning my care

What is your message of hope or words of advice?

My message of hope is to never be ashamed to share your story you never know who it may help. If you feel like something is wrong get seen by a doctor.Something that should change to make cancer care more compassionate is that people should be able to receive care no matter if they have health insurance or not. Having health insurance shouldn’t be the reason a person lives or dies.
