You are not alone
Person with a lived experience of cancer

Jennifer, United States

How did it start?

I was diagnosed with Uteran cancer at 29 years old. I was pregnant and had a miscarriage. My doctor had to perform a D&C and during that procedure, he decided to do a biopsy because he suspected something was wrong. A few days later, he called to let me know it was cancer. My heart was broken, I was scared for the future and what my future would look like.

What was the biggest challenge(s) in your experience with cancer?

My biggest challenge was the emotional aspect of it all. I had just had a miscarriage and was still in grief for that and all this information about my diagnosis was being given and treatment plans.
Cancer changed every plan I had for my life. I wanted to be a mother so much and cancer took that away.

What helped you most?

I was very fortunate to have my mom and my aunt at almost every appointment. They helped decipher the information, ask questions I didn’t think of, and support me. My entire family and my friend group was my support system. Without each of them, I couldn’t have made it through the tough days that felt overwhelming.

What was your experience of the healthcare system?

I had as great of an experience as I could have. Each doctor, nurse, and surgeon was so kind and I received great care. They answered all the questions we had and was very patient.

What is your message of hope or words of advice?

If you’re fighting, don’t give up. There is hope and there is life after the fight. Life may look different than you planned but life is still worth living and it’s beautiful. Rely on friends, family, and build a relationship with Jesus. He will walk with you through the tough days and hold you up when it’s overwhelming.
