You are not alone
Person with a lived experience of cancer

JOANNA, United Kingdom

How did it start?

It srarted as what I thought was a mouth ulcer, then finding out it was Oral Cancer

What was the biggest challenge(s) in your experience with cancer?

The emotional toll was bad, the operation was hard, had to have the Cancer cut out and Lymph nodes cut out of my neck

What helped you most?

The support from my family

What was your experience of the healthcare system?

The NHS were brilliant, from start to finish, my surgeon Dr Parkin and his team at The Royal Gwent Hospital and The Grange Hospital were fantastic, even the ongoing care was excellent and still is

What is your message of hope or words of advice?

Please check your mouth, if "Ulcers" last more than a few days, contact a Doctor or Dentist, I left mine a while and the prognosis could have been worse and my treatment from out NHS was second to none, from diagnosis to treatment was 4 weeks, it was a big operation, but I got through it with all the help, from medical care to family, I have got through it, I am so grateful to our NHS from beginning to end, I can't praise them enough, I am having regular check ups, as the first 6 months are the most prominent, but 12 months clear would be fab
