Person with a lived experience of cancer

Marianne, Canada

How did it start?

There really weren’t many warning signs of my cancer being something until I was diagnosed with a plural effusion. It was found that from the fluid that there was cancer somewhere and it was found to be in the gyne track. There was a lot of emotions with the diagnosis and just with different aspects of how my body didn’t know what was going on and the point of what was about to happen.
When the diagnosis did happen it made sense to the point that my hormones were so up and down and getting the diagnosis made a lot of sense and when i was finally diagnosed

What was the biggest challenge(s) in your experience with cancer?

I think a lot of the challenges I had was the mental toll of the diagnosis. Just knowing I had to be strong to make sure that I could fight this battle but also be strong for my family. There was times where I had the point of why me, why was I the one who had to fight this battle, but I knew I had to be strong and I would push through it.

What helped you most?

I think the thing that has gotten me through it all has been my partner, parents, sister and brother in law, family, and my best friends. They were there whenever I needed them also made sure I had what I needed and so much more. Also having a great mindset really helped in all of it

What was your experience of the healthcare system?

The experience I had with the health care system was great. Having Dr. Saciragic and her team was probably the best case scenario for me and my family. She listened and made sure all of my questions and concerns were answered and addressed.
One time I would have been failed is going to the er for a fever and everything getting pushed and no one listening fully.

What is your message of hope or words of advice?

Have hope, there are always chances that you will feel down about the situation but you just have to push through and have the best attitude possible!! Keeping positive is the best thing in the situation
