Person with a lived experience of cancer

Militza, Mexico

How did it start?

I thought having a headache was part of a stressful job, then the belly bloating came, I also thought it was stress-related. But then I kept getting bigger and bigger but I was not able to keep anything down, not even water.

What was the biggest challenge(s) in your experience with cancer?

Knowing that I had no control over my body, even if I was following every instruction given or every rule, exercise, diet, medicine... my body decided not to function and I had to adapt every single day.

What helped you most?

My husband and my two kids motivated me to get up and thrive or just to get up from the bed to the couch, but always up and going, always positive that I had to get over this day, then the other, and so on until all treatments are over and I can be Cancer free.

What was your experience of the healthcare system?

It is awful! Doctors disregarded my syntoms assuming I was neurotic and couldn't handle stress or, because of my big belly, they assumed that I was lazy and it was because of lack of exercise. I had to see 6 different specialists until I got to a GI friend of mine who ordered a CA125 test and all was uncovered, then I got to my beautiful oncologist to find out that it was Ovarian Cancer stage 3.

What is your message of hope or words of advice?

Only you know your body best! If you think there is something wrong keep looking for an answer, keep fighting for yourself! And always repeat this to yourself: If it's up to me I will get over this!!!
