Mohammad Rizwan, India
Mohammad Rizwan’s journey as a caregiver to his wife, Sana Rizwan, highlights the profound emotional, financial, and physical challenges faced by families dealing with serious illness. In 2021, Sana was diagnosed with Stage IV non-small-cell lung cancer after months of unexplained leg pain. Rizwan's persistence in seeking further medical attention, including pushing for an X-ray review, led to the discovery of cancer, which had otherwise been overlooked.
The couple's journey was marked by immense stress, with Rizwan managing treatment decisions, finances, and the emotional strain on their young son. Despite the heavy burden of medical costs, Rizwan found solace in the support of his company, family, and the Lung Connect India Foundation, a patient advocacy group. Seeking help for his mental health was also crucial, as caregiving took a toll on his well-being.
Sana's diagnosis reshaped their lives, yet they found ways to live fully, traveling to Kashmir and planning a pilgrimage to Mecca. Rizwan’s story reflects the resilience of caregivers who must juggle numerous responsibilities while remaining emotionally strong. His experience emphasizes the need for a robust support system and highlights how crucial it is for caregivers to care for their own mental health during such trying times.
