Person with a lived experience of cancer

Oluwaseyi, Nigeria

How did it start?

I saw a lump In my breast when I was breastfeeding my child. So I got it checked and did biopsy and was told I had triple negative breast cancer. The news broke me down in every way because I was still recovering from the ceasarian surgery I had.

What was the biggest challenge(s) in your experience with cancer?

All of the above. Cancer is draining in every way.

What helped you most?

I had the mindset of facing it till the very end. I also have good friends around me. Seeing my child everyday gave me courage to fight.

What was your experience of the healthcare system?

I felt heard and respected but emotionally they didn’t really understand exactly how I felt.
Emotional intelligence is not something some doctors have in a country like mine

What is your message of hope or words of advice?

Give yourself the chance to be happy again , learn to enjoy your life to the fullest and Dont let cancer take your voice.
The healthcare system should do better by listening more to survivors. Emotional intelligence is key. Pay attention to the mental health of survivors during and after treatment
