I can still remember the phone call from my OB, Valentines day, 2017. Prior to that, my symptoms started as acid reflux that won't go away. My PCP did not make much of it. 6 months prior, I went for my annual OB visit and had a breast exam. Everything was okay. 6 months later, it was a stage 3 breast cancer. How did we get here? It felt like the whole world was closing in.
Navigating the cancer continuum of care is not for the faint hearted. So many appointments to keep up with, the side effects of treatment, the mood swings, days you just don't have the energy to do anything... the list goes on. Yet, you must have some form of fight in you to keep going.
In the midst of the fight, you are blessed with community and loved ones who pray with you, pray for you, assist with appointments, keep you grounded. I call them the sacred village. Every survivor needs one.
My conclusion is that the healthcare is system overworked. In the midst of the overburdened system, doctors and nurses are trying their best to ensure you get the recommended care. As the patient on the receiving end, ensure you speak up. Make your voice heard.
To anyone dealing with cancer, don't bury your head in the sand. Be aware of the care you are receiving. Don't be scared to ask questions. It will all work out fine.
