Caregiver, family or friend

Today is World Cancer Day and how quickly it rolls around. It helps remind us of the devastating effects of this disease but also a time to reflect on the many stories of survivors.

World Cancer Day is everyday for those fighting this disease and their loved ones affected.

Cancer has not turned my world upside down through a diagnosis however it feels like it when family and friends and family of friends are diagnosed.
The feeling of empathy is at times overwhelming as you begin to think how you can help and what words to say. Sometimes a hug is the most powerful action.
One day life is normal, the next day everything has changed.

What follows could be months and even years of treatment which may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemo, immunotherapy amongst other things. That is more than turning your world upside down, that is spinning.

This sinister disease takes some people's lives and others survive it.
For those it takes we need to take care of the loved ones left behind and the one's who survive it we need to celebrate.

Please don't stop talking to people or their loved ones after a diagnosis because you don't think you know what to say. Too often people go quiet.
Call them, meet up with them, chin wag about things in life you would normally chat about, send them a simple text message saying "thinking of you." In my experience people appreciate this way more than silence.

Lastly, don't forget those left behind. They need support more than ever especially 3-6 months and beyond as the reality sets in.

What action are you going to take this World Cancer Day for people you know affected by cancer?
