Cancer turned my world upside down in ways I could never have imagined. In January 2010, my beloved husband, Amjad, was diagnosed with cancer. It feels as though it was just yesterday! Tragically, he passed away in December 2010, leaving everyone who knew him devastated. During the treatment and the mourning period that followed, we received an outpouring of support and love from so many, and that support continues to this day. Alhamdh Lillaahi.
The journey through cancer is long and challenging - not just for those who are ill, but for the caregivers, the loved ones, and the family at large.
As I reflect on this journey, my prayers go out to everyone who is currently undergoing treatment, as well as their caregivers. The emotional and physical toll is immense, and yet, it is a journey of resilience and hope. Survivorship is not an endpoint, but a continuous journey, one that I know well. Our lives were certainly turned upside down by cancer, but in the midst of the pain and loss, we also emerged stronger. We became kinder, more compassionate people - forever changed by the experience.
To all the survivors, I wish you strength and light on your path, and to all the caregivers, your love and dedication are felt deeply. My heartfelt prayers and thoughts are with you all.
A special thank you to the Cancer Society of Maldives
