Dhaka, 4 February 2026: On the occasion of World Cancer Day, the World Cancer Society Bangladesh has emphasized on cancer prevention, early detection and ensuring accessible and quality treatment. Speakers at various programs organized on the occasion of the day said that cancer has now become a major public health problem in Bangladesh, but with correct information, timely treatment and awareness, this disease can be controlled and prevented.
On the occasion of World Cancer Day, the World Cancer Society Bangladesh held a colorful rally in the capital to raise cancer awareness. This awareness rally started from the National Press Club and ended at the Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in Dhanmondi.
The rally was inaugurated by Dr. Anwarullah Chowdhury, former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University. Dr. Syed Humayun Kabir, President of World Cancer Society see Bangladesh, public health and cancer prevention researcher, presided over the rally.
The rally, attended by doctors, researchers, health workers, students and the general public, highlighted the importance of cancer prevention, healthy living and awareness. Awareness leaflets were distributed among the pedestrians at the rally. A joint initiative of the government, health sector and media has been called for in cancer prevention.
Speaking at the event, World Cancer Society Bangladesh President, Public Health and Cancer Prevention Researcher Dr. Syed Humayun Kabir said that millions of people worldwide are affected by cancer every year and the number of cancer patients in Bangladesh is also increasing day by day. Use of tobacco and tobacco products, unhealthy eating habits, obesity, environmental pollution, long-term stress and lack of regular health check-ups are increasing the risk of cancer manifold.
He also said that most cancer patients in the country seek medical attention late, which makes treatment complicated and expensive. If cancer is detected at an early stage, complete recovery is possible in many cases. Therefore, it is important to strengthen regular health checkups, especially screening programs to detect breast cancer, cervical cancer, lung and oral cavity cancer.
Cancer expert Professor Dr. Md. Habibullah Talukder Raskin said, there is nothing to fear from cancer; rather, gaining correct knowledge about cancer can save lives. It is possible to reduce the risk of cancer to a large extent by living a healthy lifestyle, avoiding tobacco and drugs, consuming nutritious food, exercising regularly and maintaining mental health.
On the occasion of World Cancer Day, the World Cancer Society Bangladesh organized discussion meetings, awareness rallies, leaflet distribution and public awareness campaigns. Through these programs, in addition to expressing sympathy for cancer patients and their families, a demand was made to make cancer treatment accessible to all.
The speakers called on the government, as well as non-governmental organizations, the media and civil society to play a more active role in cancer prevention and awareness programs. At the same time, emphasis was placed on cancer research, developing medical infrastructure and increasing the number of specialized doctors.
Finally, the World Cancer Society Bangladesh called on everyone to work collectively from their respective positions to build a cancer-free Bangladesh.
